乔茜第一次邀请塞西过来玩。乔茜妈妈说：“记住你是主人。”“你要让你的客人舒服自在。”

Josie was having Ceci over to play for the first time.
 “Remember that you are the hostess,”
 said Josie’s mom. 
 “You want to make sure
 your guest feels at home.”

门铃响了，乔茜跑去应门。在她走到前门之前，塞西推开门，鼻子闻了闻。塞西问：“我闻到了蛋糕了？”她朝厨房跑过去。

The doorbell rang, 
 and Josie ran to answer it. 
 Before she reached the front door, 
 though, Ceci burst through, 
 sniffing.“Do I smell cake?” Ceci asked,
 running toward the kitchen.

塞西打开烤箱的门，看着里面的蛋糕。塞西说：“当蛋糕好了的时候，我会再过来的。”乔茜说：“事实上，这个蛋糕是给爸爸的生日礼物。”

Ceci opened the oven door to look
at the cake inside.
 “I’ll come back when it’s ready,”
 Ceci said.
 “Actually,” Josie said, “the cake is for 
my dad’s birthday.”

“Where’s your room?” Ceci asked.
 “Let’s play outside first,” Josie said.

 “Okay,” Josie sighed.

In Josie’s bedroom, 
 Ceci yanked the dollhouse 
 from its corner to the center of the rug. 
 Doll furniture went flying into every corner of Josie’s room. 
 They played dolls for a long time, 
 until Ceci spotted the chest 
 of dress-up clothes in Josie’s closet.

“I call the pink princess gown!”
 Ceci cried.
 The pink princess gown 
 was Josie’s favorite. 
 As Ceci squeezed into it,
 Josie heard the dress rip. 
 “I don’t think it fits you,” she said. Ceci glared at her over her shoulder.
 “That’s not a polite thing to say,”she said. “Besides, I’m the guest.”

塞西走出乔茜卧室，回到厨房。她盯着蛋糕看，蛋糕放在金属托架上冷却。塞西问：“蛋糕好了吗？”“我们可以当做零食吃一些？”乔茜问：“吃些饼干怎么样？”“妈妈做的饼干也很好吃。”

Ceci walked out of 
 Josie’s bedroom and back to the kitchen. 
 She stared at the cake, 
 cooling now on a wire rack.
 “Is it ready?” Ceci asked.
 “Can we have some for a snack?”
 “How about some cookies 
 instead?”Josie asked. 
 “My mom makes great cookies.”

塞西打开冰箱门。她问：“你有冰激凌吗？”她转过头来，笑着对乔茜说：“我是客人。”乔茜关上冰箱门说：“我们要留着冰激凌配蛋糕吃。”

Ceci opened the freezer door. “Have
you got any ice cream?” she asked.
 She turned and smiled at Josie. “I am
the guest.”
 “ We’re saving the ice cream to go with
the cake,” Josie said, pushing shut
the freezer door.

塞西穿着乔茜的粉色公主裙走出厨房，哼着歌曲。她唱着：“我是客人...我是客人... ”一路唱到浴室。她轻声说：“如果我们试用你妈妈的化妆品，她不会介意的。”“因为我是客人。”

Ceci drifted out of the kitchen 
 in Josie’s pink princess gown, 
 singing to herself. 
 She sang, “I’m the guest . . .
 I’m the guest . . .” 
 all the way to the bathroom.
 “Your mom won’t mind
 if we try on her makeup,” she whispered,
 “because I’m the guest.”

乔茜紧张地看着，当塞西在梳妆台倒腾的时候。她看到一些口红，给自己涂上口红。然后用口红在镜子上画了几个红心，看着大笑。

Josie watched nervously
 while Ceci poked through drawers. 
 She found some red lipstick 
 and put it on.
 Then she drew red lipstick hearts
 on the mirror and started laughing.

Josie couldn’t take it anymore.
 “I don’t care if you’re the guest!” she shouted. “It’s my dad’s birthday,

Josie and her mom stood on their
front porch, waving as Ceci was
driven away.
 “ Well,” asked Josie’s mom, “how
was it being the hostess?”
 “ I would like being the hostess,”
 Josie said, “if I had a better guest.”

乔茜妈妈笑了，说：“有些客人举止行为像怪兽一样。”乔茜说：“这我相信。”

Josie’s mom smiled and said,
 “Some guests behave like monsters.”
 “I can believe it,” Josie said.

“Stop that,” Josie whispered to Ceci.
 “ I-am-the-guest!” 
 Ceci hissed, and left the bathroom. 
 On the way through the kitchen, 
 she stopped at the birthday cake
 and tore off a big chunk.

Ceci stared at her, 
 licking crumbs from her fingers. “What do you

Anna saw her mother taking large, 
brightly painted Easter eggs out of
a box. 
“They're called pysanky eggs,” 
Anna's mother said. “They're 
Ukrainian Easter eggs. Your 
Grandmother Sasha gave them 
to us.”

“They're real eggs?” Anna asked. 
“They're so beautiful.” 
“Yes. They’re goose eggs. Her 
grandmother painted them over 
100 years ago, in Ukraine,” 
Anna's mother said. “She also 
brought something just for you.”

“A music box!” Anna said as she 
began to wind it. 
“The music played. The doors 
opened. “There's a dancing goose 
inside!” Anna said. 
“Ask her to read you the story about 
it after dinner,” said her mother.

“The eggs must be hard to paint,” 
Anna said. 
“It takes time,” her grandmother 
said. “I’ll show you how to do it 
tomorrow.” 
“Will you read me the story about 
the dancing goose and the blue egg 
tonight?” Anna asked.

Grandmother Sasha opened a large 
storybook. 
“There once was a kind old woman 
who lived all alone near the woods,” 
her grandmother began. “Her family 
was far away. Night after night, she 
sat and played her music box.”

“One cold morning, the old woman 
found a goose with a broken wing. 
She took care of the goose all winter.” 
“When the goose was strong again, 
she laid one blue egg before she flew 
away. Soon, the blue egg hatched,” 
Grandmother Sasha read.

“The baby goose loved the kind 
woman. It lived with her for the rest 
of her life,” read Sasha. “The woman 
never felt all alone again.” 
“That's the dancing goose in my 
music box!” Anna said.

“Anna got up early the next morning. 
“This kistka pen draws with warm 
wax,” Sasha said, “as you would 
draw with ink. The design on this 
egg will have parts that are white, 
yellow, green, and dark blue. I'm 
drawing the part I want to be yellow.”

“This wax will protect the yellow part 
of the design when I dip the whole 
egg in green dye,” Sasha explained. 
“Another wax drawing protects the 
parts I want to be white.” 
“Watch closely, while I tell you a
story about painting eggs.”

“One long winter in Ukraine, all the 
houses were snowed in for weeks,” 
she began. “No one could walk 
to the village. One woman had 
dozens of goose eggs to sell but she
couldn't walk to the market.”

“The woman waited for the snow 
to melt. She became very bored,” 
Grandmother Sasha said. “She 
painted a cow's face on an egg. 
She painted a tree on another egg. 
She kept painting until she had 
painted them all!”

“That spring, the woman sold all her 
painted eggs at the village Easter 
fair,” her grandmother said. “People 
came from other villages to see 
her painted eggs. They all wanted 
to try their own designs, ” said her 
grandmother.

“Some people liked simple designs. 
Others learned to paint in layers of 
colored dye and wax, as I am,” her 
grandmother said. “Are you ready 
to try one?” she asked. 
“I'll try a simple one,” Anna said, 
“I'll draw a dancing goose, then I'll 
dip him in blue!”

Anna and the Painted Eggs

Juanito wanted to play with his 
friend, Jacob, who was in his class 
at school. Juanito and Jacob were 
the same age. Both their names 
started with the letter J. They even 
lived in the same neighborhood.

Juanito walked over to Jacob's 
house. He brought along his 
basketball. Juanito had never been 
to Jacob’s house. Juanito only knew
where Jacob lived. 
When Juanito got to Jacob's front 
door, he reached up and rang the 
doorbell.

“Hi, Jacob. Can you come out to 
play?” asked Juanito. 
“Sure,” said Jacob after he asked his 
mother. “But only for a little while. 
I'm having dinner soon.”

Before they stepped off the front 
porch, Juanito asked Jacob, “Hey, 
what is that little box by the door?” 
Jacob said it was a mezuzah as he 
reached up to touch it softly and 
kissed his two fingers.

Juanito repeated the word, 
“MeZOOzah? What is it for?” 
Juanito knew English and Spanish, 
but he had never heard this word 
before. 
“It has Hebrew words from the 
Shema inside,” Jacob answered.

“ShehMA? What's that?” asked 
Juanito as he bounced the 
basketball a couple of times. 
Jacob replied, “A few words from 
the Torah. They’re words Jewish 
people say as we pray every day . . . 
Ready to play?” He grew anxious 
as a cricket started to signal that 
evening was near.

“The TOHrah? What's that?” Juanito 
was still curious. 
“It is part of the Bible,” Jacob said. 
“Come inside. I’ll show you.” 
Bible was a word that Juanito knew. 
His family was Roman Catholic.

Jacob reached up to touch the 
mezuzah again and then kissed his 
two fingers as he and Juanito went 
into the house. His father taught 
him to do this every time he entered 
and exited the house.

Soon they were in front of a tall 
bookshelf filled with books and 
other things. As Jacob pointed up 
to a set of five books, he said, “See,
that's the Torah.” 
There were so many more new 
things for Juanito to see, including 
what looked like a ram's horn.

“How about this? Is it a musical 
instrument?” 
Handing the curled horn to Juanito, 
Jacob said, “That’s what it is, all 
right. But we call it a shofar.” 
“SHOfar?” Juanito chuckled. “So far 
I have learned four new Hebrew
words!”

“Go ahead, try to play it like a 
trumpet,” said Jacob. Juanito did. 
He startled himself and the cricket 
outside as he strained to play a 
steady note. The sound brought 
Jacob's father to the living room.

At first, Juanito thought Jacob's dad 
would be angry. After all, Juanito's 
dad was a little angry when Juanito 
had played with his trumpet. But 
instead, Jacob's dad burst into 
laughter. Then, the sound of the 
cricket came back. 
“Mother is waiting. It is time to 
welcome the Sabbath now, son.”

Juanito almost asked a question 
about this new word, but Jacob's 
dad asked, “Would you like to join
us, young man?” 
“Can you stay for dinner and sleep 
over, Juanito?” asked Jacob. 
Juanito telephoned his mother to 
ask. She said he could stay since 
tomorrow was Saturday.

Juanito stayed that night at the 
house of his friend, Jacob. Juanito 
learned some more about being 
Jewish, and he learned another new 
word—mitzvah. But mostly they 
talked about playing basketball the 
next day. Both agreed that playing 
basketball with a friend was far 
better than playing alone.

At Jacob’s House

Introduction 
Work is done when something is 
moved from one place to another. 
Machines are used to do the work. 
They move things from one place 
to another. Some things are easy 
to move. Other things are not.

Small machines are used for smaller 
jobs. Things like shovels are simple 
machines. They do not have many 
moving parts.

Big machines are used to move 
heavy things. They are used to build 
tall buildings. They are used to build 
roads and bridges. They are used 
to take resources from the earth.

Building Tall Buildings 
It takes many big machines to 
build a tall building. Large power 
shovels called excavators dig deep 
holes in the ground. Some power 
shovels have huge buckets that can 
scoop a swimming pool-sized pile 
of dirt in one scoop. Others have 
clamlike buckets that take big bites 
out of the earth.

Bulldozers are machines that move 
the dirt around. Giant dump trucks 
carry the dirt away. Concrete trucks 
carry concrete to the work site. 
Flatbed trucks carry steel beams 
and rods to the work site. Large 
cranes lift steel beams into place. 
They also carry buckets of concrete 
to workers high above ground.

Building Roads 
It takes many kinds of large 
machines to build a road. Large 
scrapers are used to get rid of trees 
and brush. They also are used to 
get rid of small hills. Loaders are 
used to dig up dirt and rocks. 
They put dirt and rocks into giant 
dump trucks that carry it away. 
Some dump trucks are so big 
that they can carry enough dirt 
to equal the weight of twenty 
elephants.

Graders smooth out the roadway, 
and pavers lay the road surface 
onto the roadway. A roller following 
behind the paver presses down 
on the new road surface to make 
it smooth and flat.

Taking Resources 
from the Earth 
There are many resources we 
need that are buried deep inside 
the Earth. We need big machines 
to get resources out. Oil drilling 
rigs are set up to remove oil.

Do You Know? 
A bulldozer can move more 
dirt in fifteen minutes than a 
person can shovel in five days.

Large drills are used to get coal out 
of mines. Very large excavators dig 
up the earth in search of resources. 
Huge dump trucks then carry the 
resources to where they can be 
used to make products.

Big Machines on Water 
There are big machines that move 
things on the water. Tugboats are 
machines that move other things 
over water by pulling and pushing. 
They pull barges. They push and 
pull large ships.

Ocean liners are large ships that 
move people. Oil tankers are huge 
ships that carry massive amounts 
of oil. And container ships are 
stacked high with containers that 
carry things from place to place.

Big Machines in the Air 
Large airplanes carry people and 
cargo. A 747 is a giant passenger 
jet that can carry 400 to 450 people. 
The C-5 is a huge cargo plane. 
It is almost as long as a football 
field. Helicopters are flying 
machines too. The skycrane is 
a helicopter that is used to lift 
heavy objects. It can lift 15,000 
pounds. It is used to carry things 
like bulldozers and power line 
towers into hard-to-reach places.

You can see that many large 
machines are at work moving 
things from place to place. But 
probably the most common is the 
big rig. The big rig is made of two 
parts—the tractor and the trailer. 
Big rigs carry goods over roads 
that wind around the world.

Big Movers 
Have you ever seen a monster 
truck? Monster trucks are big! They 
aren’t the biggest vehicles, though. 
What’s even bigger than a monster 
truck?

Vehicles That Move 
Things and People The Duck 
The “Duck” is a truck that can 
travel on both land and water. 
On land, the Duck moves around 
on six wheels. In water, the Duck 
floats like a boat. The Duck can 
carry people to places that are 
hard to reach.

Vehicle Bridge 
This vehicle is a bridge that can 
move. Other vehicles can drive 
over the bridge. When the bridge 
is no longer needed, it folds up onto
the vehicle.

Cranes 
Cranes lift and move heavy things. 
Some cranes help workers build tall 
buildings. Others are used to move 
goods from ships to land.

Dump Trucks 
The world’s biggest dump trucks 
are used at mines. Miners use these 
trucks to carry rocks and dirt. The 
trucks use some of the biggest tires 
in the world. Their tires are twice as 
tall as a person.

Overland Trains 
These trains are used to move 
heavy things to places without 
roads. The trains move on big 
wheels instead of on train tracks. 
Each wheel is taller than a person.

Moving Space Vehicles 
Some of the world’s biggest vehicles 
were made to move things that 
go into space. They carry space 
vehicles on a high platform. These 
vehicles are so wide that they need 
their own road.

Vehicles That Dig 
Giant Power Shovels 
Miners use giant power shovels 
to dig rocks and dirt out of a mine. 
Giant power shovels have a big 
bucket that can break into the 
earth and scoop it up.

Tunnel Diggers, 
These vehicles dig under the
surface of the earth. They can even 
move through solid rock.

Bagger 288 
The largest vehicle in the world is 
the Bagger 288. This huge vehicle 
digs mines. The Bagger 288 is almost 
as long as two football fields.

Do You Know? 
People have built enormous vehicles since 
ancient times. The Helepolis (heh–LEH-puh-lis) 
was a huge tower built on wheels. It was used 
in battles in ancient Greece. The Helepolis 
was so heavy that more than 3,000 men were 
needed to move it.

It digs with a huge wheel. The 
wheel has buckets along its edge 
that scoop up dirt as the wheel 
turns. The Bagger 288 is big enough
to move mountains.

Big Vehicles 
Big vehicles are used in many ways. 
These vehicles move heavy loads. 
They travel both above and below 
the ground. 
Gigantic vehicles have gotten much 
bigger over the years. Some of 
these vehicles keep getting bigger 
and bigger. How big are they going 
to get?

Bigger Than a Monster Truck

On Christmas Eve, the Hoppers
hung their stockings by the fire. 
They planned to stay awake until
Santa Claus came. 
“What can we do to pass the time?”
asked Fluffy Tail. 
“One of us could tell a fairy tale,” said
Floppy Ears. 
“Why don't we make some
popcorn?” said Speedy Legs. 
The Hoppers munched popcorn
and waited for Santa Claus.

Ten o'clock came, then eleven 
o'clock. The Hoppers were wide 
awake except for Mother Hopper, 
who fell asleep in her chair. 
Then Speedy Legs said, “I hear 
something.” 
“It sounds like sleigh bells,” said
Floppy Ears. 
“Is it Santa?” cried Fluffy Tail.

The sleigh bells came closer and 
closer. Soon they heard footsteps 
coming toward the door. Snubby 
Nose ran to the door and opened it. 
“It is Papa!” cried Snubby Nose. 
Sure enough, Papa Hopper was 
home late from getting the Hoppers 
their presents. He had sleigh bells 
on his hat and boots.

“Merry Christmas, Hoppers,” said 
Papa Hopper. He hugged all the 
Hoppers and sat in a chair next 
to Mother Hopper. 
Snubby Nose hopped in his lap. 
“Did you see Santa Claus?” he asked. 
“Santa Claus!” said Papa Hopper, 
sitting up. “You Hoppers know that 
Santa won't come unless you're 
asleep.”

“That's right,” said Mother Hopper.
“Off to bed, all of you.” 
The Hoppers groaned, but they
went to bed. Mother and Papa 
Hopper tucked them in and turned
off the lights. It was very late, and
soon all the Hoppers fell asleep—all
except Snubby Nose. 
“I want to see Santa Claus,” thought
Snubby Nose. “I will creep
downstairs with my flashlight.”

Snubby Nose took his flashlight and 
snuck downstairs. Soon, he heard 
sleigh bells coming closer. He heard 
the pitter-patter of reindeer feet on 
the roof. Then he heard Santa Claus 
coming down the chimney. He 
waited until he saw the fur on 
Santa's boots. Then Snubby Nose 
turned on his flashlight and cried, 
“Ha! I see you!”

Santa Claus jumped straight into the 
air, he was so surprised. “Oh! What 
are you doing up, Snubby Nose? You 
know you’re supposed to be asleep!” 
Snubby Nose was very startled. He 
dropped his flashlight and jumped 
into the closet under the stairs. 
“I'm sorry I was bad!” Snubby Nose 
said to himself. “I hope Santa 
doesn't put coal in my stocking.”

Snubby Nose could hear Santa 
filling the stockings. Then, he heard 
him going up the chimney, and he 
heard the patter of reindeer hoofs. 
Finally, he heard sleigh bells ringing 
into the distance. Snubby Nose was 
upset, but it was very late, and soon 
he fell asleep.

The next morning, Speedy Legs, 
Floppy Ears, and Fluffy Tail ran 
downstairs. Their stockings were full 
of treats. Mother and Papa Hopper 
came down after them.

“Where is Snubby Nose?” asked Papa 
Hopper. No one could find him, but 
then Fluffy Tail saw a note taped to 
Snubby Nose’s stocking. It read: 
“I met Snubby Nose last night, 
And we both had quite a fright. 
Snubby Nose had such a scare, 
He ran and hid beneath the stair.”

Speedy Legs opened the closet door, 
and out jumped Snubby Nose. 
“Santa Claus filled my stocking with 
coal, didn’t he?” cried Snubby Nose. 
“I don't think so,” said Mother 
Hopper. Snubby Nose ran to his 
stocking and found it full of treats, 
just like the other Hoppers’.

Then Snubby Nose found another 
note at the bottom of his stocking. 
It read: 
“Santa Claus is very shy, 
But he will never pass you by.” 
Snubby Nose laughed and jumped 
up and down. “I will never try to 
catch Santa again,” he said. Then 
the Hoppers all had a merry
Christmas.

Catching Santa

Where Is It? 
The People’s Republic of China 
is one of the biggest countries in 
the world. Along with Russia, it 
makes up a big part of Asia. Many 
other countries share a border 
with China.

Beijing is the capital of China. 
The city is more than three 
thousand years old. More than 
fifteen million people live there.

People 
More than one billion people live 
in China. More people live in China 
than in any other country in the 
world. Seven out of ten Chinese 
people speak Mandarin. People 
also speak many other languages, 
including English. 
Chinese writing does not use 
the letters of the English alphabet. 
Instead, it uses thousands of 
characters that stand for words 
or parts of words.

Some people live and work in the 
tall buildings in China’s big cities. 
Others live on small farms and 
grow food. More people live 
in towns and villages than in 
other places.

Celebrations 
The Chinese New Year is one of 
the biggest celebrations in China. 
It takes place in late January or 
early February. Many cities hold 
parades. People dress up in colorful 
costumes. Some people dress up 
as lions or dragons. Many Chinese 
people believe lions and dragons 
bring good luck. People often shoot 
off fireworks, too.

History 
China has one of the oldest 
civilizations still around today. 
Experts think it began more 
than five thousand years ago. 
The ancient Chinese people created 
many things we still use today. 
They were the first to create paper. 
They were also the first to make 
gunpowder. We still use gunpowder 
in fireworks today.

Chinese people also discovered how 
to make silk cloth. Long ago, people 
came to China from far away places 
to buy silk cloth. The road they used 
was called the Silk Road.

Land 
China is so large that it has many 
different types of land. The north 
is mostly desert. The south has 
some of the tallest mountains in 
the world.

In other parts of China, forests 
cover the land. China also has large 
wetlands and flat areas covered 
with grass. Much of this land is 
used to grow food.

Animals 
Many people know of giant pandas 
and Siberian tigers. Giant pandas 
live in bamboo forests in a small 
area in the center of China. They eat
only bamboo. 
Siberian tigers are among the largest 
cats in the world. They live in the 
forests in the east and the south 
of China. Both Siberian tigers and 
giant pandas are in danger of dying 
out. However, many people are 
working to protect them.

Conclusion 
China is a large country. Many 
different people and animals live in 
this land. People from all over the 
world come to explore China each 
year. If you were to visit China, 
what would you most like to see?

 when life was much different. 
 Imagine a time before the United States was a country. 
 It is a period known as the Colonial Times.

Colonial Life

Deep Underwater 
Imagine a trip to the deepest part of 
the ocean. What would you expect to 
see? Would it be dark or light? Would 
it be warm or cold? Would you find 
strange new animals and plants?

Sunlight warms the surface, or 
shallow, parts of the ocean. Plants 
and animals that need sunlight and 
warm water live there. Deep in the 
ocean, other animals live in water 
that is cold and dark.

Diving Deep

The deep ocean
is freezing cold. 
The weight, or
water pressure, 
of very deep
water can 
harm you.
Sport divers 
wear air tanks
for safety. Deep 
divers wear a
special diving 
suit. Scientists
ride in a small 
submarine called
a submersible.

Oceanographers 
Scientists who study the ocean are 
called oceanographers (oh-shuh-
NOG-ruh-furs). They often live for
months on a ship. Some study what
a sea animal eats and where it lives.

Using Satellites for Tracking 
Satellites can help to track sea 
animals’ travels. Scientists tag some 
animals. A satellite can track the 
signal from the tag. The signal 
shows where the animal goes.

Counting the Sea Animals 
What animals live in the ocean? 
Where do they live? How many are 
there? Oceanographers studied and 
counted animals for ten years to 
find out. 
The surprising report is called the
Census of Marine Life.

The Census of Marine Life 
The first surprise was where things 
lived: everywhere! Marine species 
lived in the hottest and coldest 
places. Some species lived in deep 
places without light or oxygen.

Living in Hot and Cold Water 
The very cold Deep Ocean Zone 
has hot volcanoes in it. The water 
temperature at a volcano can be 
400oC (752oF). Some species of 
shrimp, crabs, worms, and bacteria 
live in this very hot water.

Huge groups of Arctic sea life were 
also found living in freezing water. 
Some species of squid, cod, and 
jellyfish live under solid ice that is
700 meters (2,296 ft) thick.

What Did We Learn? 
The marine census counted over 
230,000 species. Over 6,000 new 
species had never been seen before! 
Some creatures were see-through. 
Some had warning lights that 
turned on and off. Others had long 
feelers instead of eyes.

What else lives in the deep ocean? 
Scientists keep finding new species 
and new facts. They think that only 
one-fourth of all marine life has 
been counted. So there are many 
more surprises to come!

Deep in the Ocean

Nine-year-old Mia is one of almost 
three million children and adults in 
the United States who have type 1 
diabetes. This disease causes 
the body to stop making insulin. 
Insulin allows our bodies' cells 
to take in glucose, or sugar, from 
food. Our bodies' cells need 
glucose for energy. Without insulin, 
the cells do not take in the glucose 
we need to work or play.

Doctors don't know exactly what 
causes type 1 diabetes or how to 
cure it. With the right treatment, 
people with type 1 diabetes can live
normal, healthy lives.

Do You Know? 
According to experts, each year in the United States, 
more than fifteen thousand children and fifteen thousand
adults learn that they have type 1 diabetes. That's about
eighty people each day.

To live healthy lives, people like Mia 
take special care of themselves. They 
watch what they eat and get lots of 
exercise. They also test their blood 
sugar levels many times each day.

Almost 26 million people in the United States have
diabetes. Most of them, about 23 million, have type 2
diabetes— a disease in which the body still makes insulin
but can't use it very well. The rest, about 3 million people, 
have type 1 diabetes.

Reading A–Z: How did you find 
out you have type 1 diabetes? 
Mia: When I was four-and-a-half, 
I had to get up at night to go to the 
bathroom a lot. I went to the doctor, 
and they checked my blood sugar. It 
was really high. We had to go to the 
hospital, and I got scared. The day I 
got out of the hospital, I was feeling 
better.

Reading A–Z: What kind of 
medicine do you take to stay 
healthy? 
Mia: I take insulin. I wear an insulin 
pump near my waist. The pump 
makes taking the medicine easier.

Do You Know? 
Most people who take insulin use a needle to put the
medicine under the skin. Insulin pumps can deliver insulin 
more accurately than shots. They release small amounts 
of insulin all day long. They can even give bigger doses at
mealtimes, if necessary.

I prick my finger about twelve times 
a day to test my blood with a blood 
glucose meter. It doesn't hurt. If my 
blood sugar is high, the pump puts 
insulin into my bloodstream. If my 
blood sugar is low, I have a snack or
some juice.

I count the carbohydrates in my 
food and put the number into my 
pump. That helps the pump know 
how much insulin to give me.

Reading A–Z: Are there foods you 
cannot eat? 
Mia: I can eat anything I want. My 
mom just has to know about it, and 
I have to get the right amount of 
insulin.

Reading A–Z: What other things 
do you do to stay healthy? 
Mia: I ride my bike with my brother, 
Alex, and my friends. I like to rollerskate
and swim and do archery. I
get my arms exercising by climbing
a tree.

I also wear a bracelet that tells 
people that I have type 1 diabetes. If
I was walking home and my blood 
sugar was too low, I could pass out. 
The bracelet has my mom's phone 
number on it.

type 1 diabetes make you different
from other kids? 
Mia: I have to go to the school nurse 
every few hours to have my blood 
sugar checked.

Reading A–Z: What is the hardest 
thing about having diabetes? 
Mia: My dad switches out the place 
where my pump is connected to 
my skin every three days. He has 
to move the needle.

Reading A–Z: What would you 
like other kids to know about 
having type 1 diabetes? 
Mia: Diabetes is not contagious. You
can play sports and do anything 
you want. Having type 1 diabetes 
can be kind of a bummer, but I'm 
used to it. I’m not much different 
from any other kid.
